About Dr. GU

Personal Information

Dr. Jason Gu was born in Jiangsu, P.R. China. He received a B. Eng. degree in 1992 from the Department of Electrical Engineering & Information Science (Special Class for the Young Gifted 1987-1990), University of Science and Technology of China, MASc. degree in 1995 from Biomedical & Instrumentation Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China and Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Since September 2000, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Dalhousie University and is presently a professor of Electrical Engineering. His research contributions cover Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, Control Systems, and Intelligent Systems. He has published over 250 Journal, book chapters and conference papers in biomedical engineering, robotics, systems and control. Jason served as associate editor for many IEEE periodicals,and he is currently the associate editor for Journal of Control and Intelligent Systems, International Journal of Robotics and Automation, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, IEEE Transaction on Mechatronics, IEEE Access, and IEEE SMC Magzine. He enjoys sports (all racquet sports, including badminton and tennis) and music.

Service to the profession

Dr. Gu has served the engineering profession for about 20 years, and he has held positions of increasing responsibility. While he has been an active member of several international professional associations and editorial and conference boards, his service has been mostly with the IEEE. He has served in many positions at the section and regional levels of IEEE. He is the editorial board member of the IEEE TASE (2022-2024), IEEE SMC(2017- ), and IEEE Access(2013- ).

Dr. Gu served as associate editor for many IEEE periodicals and Program/General Chair for over a dozen IEEE conferences and has been the Vice Chair and Chair for IEEE Canada Atlantic Section (CAS) and IEEE Canada President/Region 7 director. He is currently the IEEE Tellers Committee Chair (2024-2025).
